Indy 500 Daily Track Report – May 12
Mike Conway rolled out in late afternoon on Opening Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a brand new ABC Supply Dallara powered by Honda.
Conway logged 33 laps total and posted his quickest lap of 214.1mph on the final lap of his run. Conway’s teammate for the month, Wade Cunningham did not run in his No.41 ecat/ABC Supply Dallara/Honda but will run on Sunday.
“We’re running a new ABC Supply car, so we shook it down just to make sure there were no problems,” said Conway. “We tried to get a good feel for what the car was doing, made some changes and we found some things so it was good. Today wasn’t about speed for us. We’d learned a few things between[Wade’s] rookie orientation and today which we needed to verify on track. As the week rolls on, then that’s when the real work starts. Tomorrow we’ll be out as soon as we can and learn as much as we can to try to find some speed.”
Team owner A.J. Foyt said, “We got out a little later than we expected to. We had about 30+ laps on the tires and as time ran out on us, we made some changes and he ran a little over 214 [mph]. Probably if we put new tires on he’d be 216 and half. We’re kind of happy –it’s the first time with this brand new car we unpacked.”
